Riyadh (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy held talks on efforts to reach “sustainable fair, and comprehensive” peace in Ukraine, according to a joint statement released on Tuesday by the Saudi State News Agency (SPA).

Zelenskiy and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio have been in Saudi Arabia since Monday with Ukrainian and U.S. officials scheduled to hold crunch talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to uncover a path towards concluding the war.

Crown Prince Mohammed and Zelenskiy stated in their meeting they will increase investment ties between the two nations in sectors including energy, food industries and infrastructure, the joint statement also said.

“The two sides said they are looking forward to exploring joint cooperation opportunities in the areas of oil, gas, their derivatives, and petrochemicals,”

According to the joint statement.

How have past Saudi-Ukraine talks influenced today’s negotiations?

Earlier in June last year, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman also met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Jeddah. During the session, relations between Saudi Arabia and Ukraine were examined and developments in the Ukrainian-Russian crisis were examined.

The crown prince confirmed the Kingdom’s keenness and backing for all international endeavours and efforts sought to resolve the crisis, the Saudi Press Agency reported.  At that time, the leaders also debated ways to mitigate the humanitarian consequences resulting from the crisis.

Zelenskiy voiced appreciation for the Kingdom’s actions in this regard. Zelenskiy arrived in the coastal city and was welcomed by the deputy governor of the Makkah Region Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz.
