Kyiv (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A railway hub near the Ukrainian capital Kyiv was hit during a widespread Russian drone and missile assault, damaging the depot and railway carriages, according to Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s state railway company, on Saturday.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its assaults on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and facilities, focusing on power stations and railway hubs.
“Russia continues to disregard any peace efforts and instead strikes critical civilian infrastructure, including our energy system and railways,”
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on X.
“This shows that no decisions to strengthen Ukraine and raise pressure on Russia can be delayed. And especially not under the pretext of peace process,”
he added.
Overnight, hundreds of Russian drones and missiles caused more damage and casualties across Ukraine.

How badly was the Kyiv railway hub damaged in the strikes?
As reported by Reuters, Ukrzaliznytsia announced on Telegram that it had to cancel several suburban trains near the capital and Chernihiv in northeastern Ukraine.
Emergency services reported a fire and destruction at the railway station and depot, but provided no additional details. The report also mentioned an attack on infrastructure in the Chernihiv region.
Furthermore, the Ukrainian military reported that Russia launched 653 drones and 51 missiles during the night. Ukrainian forces managed to shoot down 585 drones and 30 missiles.
How are widespread energy outages affecting Ukrainian regions?
Ukraine’s Ministry for Development of Communities and Territories reported that power and heat generation facilities in the Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions were attacked.
Telegram reports that 9,500 customers are still without heat and 34,000 lack water in the southern Odesa region.
“Port facilities (in Odesa) have also been attacked: part of the infrastructure has been de-energised, and operators have switched to backup power from generators,”
the ministry said.
The Ukrainian energy ministry reported that overnight attacks impacted energy infrastructure in eight regions, leading to blackouts.
“Emergency repair work is already underway where safety conditions permit. Energy companies are doing everything possible to restore power to all customers as quickly as possible,”
the ministry said on the Telegram messenger.
Russia’s war in Ukraine has profoundly impacted Europe through energy disruptions and economic slowdowns.
When did Russia launch the most devastating attack on the Ukrainian railway?
On August 5, 2025, Lozova, a key railway hub in eastern Ukraine, experienced the largest and most devastating Russian attack on infrastructure supporting Ukraine’s railway system.
This attack comprised 34 drone strikes that caused severe damage to the train station and the nearby rail depot. Two individuals, including a railway worker, lost their lives, and 13 people, among them two children, were injured.
In September, the CEO of the state railway company stated that since the summer, Russia has initiated a large-scale wave of attacks on Ukraine’s railways, using new tactics like long-range drones to target key points. However, the network remains operational for the time being.
