Moscow (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Russian spokesman Dmitry Pesko said that it was Ukraine’s sovereign right to choose whether it wanted to join the European Union. He further added that Russia did not intend to dictate to Ukraine how it should approach the question.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was questioned if Ukraine could one day join the European Union, he said:

“This is the sovereign right of any country.”

“We are talking about integration and economic integration processes. And here, of course, no one can dictate anything to any country, and we are not going to do that,”

Peskov expressed.

Peskov also said, though, that Russia’s position was different when it came to Ukraine joining military alliances.

“There is a completely different position, of course, on security-related issues related to defence or military alliances,”

Peskov said.

Why are the US and Russia holding talks in Riyadh?

On the other hand, Currently, U.S. and Russian officials are meeting in Riyadh for their first discussions on ending the fighting in Ukraine, as Kyiv and its European partners watched from the sidelines.

Analysts say the discussions in the Saudi capital highlighted the rapid rate of U.S. efforts to halt the battle, less than a month after President Donald Trump took office and six days after he communicated by phone to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Ukraine and European heads are worried that Trump could lock in a hasty agreement with Moscow that overlooks their security interests, awards Russia for raiding its neighbour, and exits Putin free to intimidate Ukraine or other nations in the future.

Analysts say that Trump’s squad, by ruling out NATO membership for Ukraine and stating that Kyiv’s wish to win back all its lost region is a fantasy, has made significant concessions in advance. U.S. officials state they are simply acknowledging reality. Ukraine expresses no peace agreement can be made on its behalf.

“We, as a sovereign country, simply will not be able to accept any agreements without us,”

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated.
