Moscow (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Russia’s spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that the European Union is actively pursuing the continuation of the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, in opposition to the new United States administration.

“Europeans are still on the path of sanctions dive, on the path of conviction to continue the war,”

Peskov said at a press briefing.

“This conviction of the Europeans is in complete contrast to the spirit of seeking a solution regarding Ukraine, which we are now doing with the Americans,”

He also said.

Additionally, the spokesman asserted that there are still no preconditions for restarting dialogue with the European Union after the block approved a new 16th package of sanctions against Russia, hitting Russian banks, trade entities, ships allegedly connected to the Russian administration, and media outlets.

How does Russia claim EU sanctions prolong the conflict?

Russia has long condemned the sanctions of the European Union as being unjustified and deleterious to both the Russian and European economies.

Earlier, Russia has threatened to retaliate with countermeasures against EU nations, claiming that sanctions are economic warfare. They have already applied different retaliatory measures, including limitations on EU food imports and other products.

Russia claims EU sanctions hurt not only Russia but also European economies by destabilizing trade and increasing prices for consumers. Russia consistently portrays EU sanctions as politically driven to weaken Russia’s influence and erode sovereignty. They assert that they are involved in a wider Western effort to isolate and put pressure on Russia.

The Kremlin has also protested the legitimacy of EU sanctions before international courts. It asserts that they are in contravention of international law and are not justified by the circumstances. Sanctions have put a severe strain on diplomatic relations between the EU and Russia, with Russia asserting that the EU is meddling in its internal affairs and destabilizing the area.
