Russia confirms President Putin’s unprecedented China trip plans

Moscow (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Kremlin announced on Wednesday that active preparations are in progress for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s upcoming trip to China, describing the visit as “unprecedented.”

“Putin will make a completely unprecedented visit to China, for which active preparations are currently underway,”

Peskov briefed journalists during a press briefing.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit 2025, which takes place in Tianjin will follow to the dignified and ceremonial ending of the first SCO Plus Meeting and 25th Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the SCO plus back to back keynote addresses to be given by Chinese President Xi Jinping just as international leaders and heads of international organizations gather in the excellent world-class port city in northern China. 

When did Xi Jinping last meet Vladimir Putin in person?

The most recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping occurred on May 8, 2025, at the Kremlin in Moscow, during Xi Jinping’s state visit to Russia between May 7 and May 10, which also involved participation in the 2025 Moscow Victory Day Parade on May 9, celebrating 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War.

During the visit, the two leaders engaged in comprehensive talks on bilateral relations, international and regional issues, and signed a joint statement to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership. 

When did Putin last travel to China before this trip?

Russian President Vladimir Putin last visited China in May 2024. He paid an official state visit to Beijing on May 16 to 17, 2024. This visit was Putin’s first foreign trip after beginning his fifth presidential term. Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the visit to deepen the strategic partnership between Russia and China.
