Hasselt (Brussels Morning) – The residents of Runkst in Hasselt are protesting the city’s plans to reduce the size of their community meeting center arguing it will be inadequate for their needs.

Last night in Hasselt folks from Runkst weren’t happy about the smaller meeting center plans. They protested and even handed out pamphlets at the city council meeting. A  group of around 25 Runkst residents gathered at the town hall entrance. Francine Van Oosterwick expressed their anger saying“ We really want our hall and our comfort there. They can’t take that away from us and we won’t stand for it” Francine Neven added “It’s a waste of money if the hall will be unusable”

The city changed the hall plans making it 130 m2 smaller than before. Adrien Meuwis mentioned “We’re left without a proper kitchen and much smaller storage spaces. Despite being the largest district we have the smallest meeting space in Hasselt”

What are the Updates on Runkst Meetings and Facility Requirements?

If the June municipal council fails to make the necessary adjustments we are  committed to maintaining our efforts until the municipal elections. This means that we will continue to advocate for change and take action until the electoral process allows for the desired modifications to be implemented. Our dedication to this cause remains steadfas and we will persist in our actions until the municipal elections are hel, ensuring that our objectives are pursued until the election process is completed.

The city official said they’ve been having meetings in Runkst and talking to the non-profit group about what they need. They mentioned there’s enough space a bigger kitchen than before and sufficient storage. The officials didn’t say why they made the design smaller.
