Roverbella, Italy, 30 August (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Emergency crews are working to restore roads and essential services after a violent Roverbella storm caused widespread damage north of Mantua. Strong winds brought down trees and telecommunications poles, damaged homes and businesses and forced authorities to close part of the Cisa provincial road.
The severe weather struck the Mantua area at around 5pm on 28 August, affecting Roverbella as well as Goito, Marmirolo, Porto Mantovano and San Giorgio Bigarello. Roverbella Mayor Mattia Cortesi activated the municipal emergency operations centre as local workers, Civil Protection volunteers and utility teams began clearing debris and repairing infrastructure.
Why did the storm cause so much damage in Roverbella?
Powerful winds uprooted trees and brought down more than 30 telecommunications poles along the Cisa road between the San Carlo roundabout and Mozzecane. The damage made the route unsafe and forced its closure while emergency crews worked to clear the area.
Cortesi said the storm had caused “extensive damage throughout the area”, affecting public property as well as private homes and businesses. Crews initially concentrated on removing fallen trees from important roads.
Electricity infrastructure was also damaged. E-Distribuzione deployed workers to restore supplies, although fallen pylons complicated the repair operation.
The emergency extended beyond Roverbella. Fallen trees and poles were reported in Goito and Marmirolo, while Porto Mantovano temporarily closed parks, gardens and cemeteries for safety inspections.
What will residents face after the Roverbella storm?
Residents could face continued disruption while authorities repair electricity and telecommunications networks, inspect damaged buildings and reopen blocked roads. The length of individual disruptions will depend on the extent of damage in each area.
Porto Mantovano Mayor Maria Paola Salvarani said roads had already been made safe and added: “In these and the coming hours we will continue with the restoration of the various areas.”
San Giorgio Bigarello also reported damage to buildings, including a sports facility and the area around the Gianni Rodari nursery school.

The immediate priority following the Roverbella storm is restoring essential services, removing dangerous trees and damaged infrastructure and reopening affected roads.
Cortesi thanked municipal employees, Civil Protection volunteers and emergency personnel involved in the response, saying “the work continues”.
Authorities had not announced a verified total financial cost for the damage. Further assessments will be needed to establish the impact on homes, businesses, telecommunications, electricity networks and municipal property.
