Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Roberta Metsola emphasized EU unity, speaking with one voice, strengthening transatlantic bonds, and aligning with the US on global challenges.

President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola said that the European Union should remain united and speak with one voice because the US understands the language of power.

A discussion has started about which leader could take on the position of “interlocutor” with the Trump administration, given the issues that arose during his first term.

What role does the EU’s single voice play in diplomacy?

The EU Parliament leader said Europe should not be “naïve” about Donald Trump’s administration supporting US interests. “I do not think that any leader alone – whoever it is – can be an as influential interlocutor as the EU. Our muscles lie in speaking with one voice, not twenty-seven individual ones. And I think that the language of power is one that the US speaks and understands quite well”, Metsola expressed.

“Frankly, this is not something new in American history […] We were voted by Europeans, and we should, therefore, equally stand up for European families, industry and products. I would like to see more European self-confidence”.

How does the EU-US partnership extend beyond politics?

She urged that the dedication to strengthening the transatlantic connection must remain unwavering and emphasized a focus on “what unites us.” She noted that the European Union and the United States cooperate in areas far beyond politics, with shared history, common values like freedom, democracy, human rights, and open societies and markets forming the foundation of their alliance

What are the shared values uniting the EU and the US?

She stated that in her exchanges with the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, she would continue to seek alignment with the US on providing common solutions to global challenges, such as the need to support Ukraine.

She added that now is the time to strengthen the Trans-Atlantic bond on defence, trade, and global affairs, rather than focusing on lecturing or moralizing about areas of differing outlooks. She emphasized that with bilateral trade reaching historic highs, it is clear that both partners are of great importance to one another.
