Washington (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – President Donald Trump picks former fast-food CEO Andrew Puzder to serve as ambassador to the European Union.
Andrew F. Puzder, the ex-chief executive of the corporation that holds the Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. fast-food chains, is President Trump’s choice to be the next U.S. ambassador to the European Union.
President Donald Trump hailed Puzder as a
“successful attorney, businessman, economic commentator, and author”
in reporting the nomination in a Truth Social post.
“During his 17-year tenure as CEO, Andy led the company out of serious financial difficulty, allowing it to survive, become financially secure, and grow. Andy will do an excellent job representing our Nation’s interests in this important region. Congratulations, Andy!”
What controversies surround Puzder?
Mr. Trump had earlier appointed Mr. Puzder to function as his labour secretary earlier in his first term. Still, Mr. Puzder’s nomination failed under bipartisan scrutiny of his company record and character. Democrats, unions and liberal groups condemned him for his comments against workplace protections such as the minimum wage and overtime regulations and conventional publications taken on Mr Puzder’s occupation of an undocumented immigrant as his housekeeper.
What are Trump’s recent threats against the European Union?
President Donald Trump has threatened the world by raising his rhetoric on tariffs lately, especially on the European Union. Trump has declared that he would put tariffs on imports from Europe because of the unfair trade practices with the EU. He mentioned the significant trade deficit with the EU and said,
“They treat us very, very badly, so they’re going to be in for tariffs.”
This is after he stated that the EU runs a trade surplus with the U.S., which he finds problematic.
Apart from threats to the EU, Trump is mulling imposing a 10% tariff on all imports from China, which he claims is a necessity because of issues such as fentanyl trafficking. This tariff forms part of a larger strategy of dealing with what he perceives as trade abuses by China.
