Mechelen’s Cheese Mill Renovation

The restoration work on the Cheese Spreading Mill in Bruggeneinde involves several key tasks to ensure the mill’s preservation and functionality:

Replacement and adjustment of the current planking:

This step aims to prevent additional damage to the mill and enhance its protection against weather elements. The planking will be carefully replaced and adjusted to maintain the structural integrity of the mill.

Complete replacement of the blades and their supporting structure:

To keep the mill operational, the blades and their supporting structure will be entirely replaced. This is crucial to ensure the mill can continue its function effectively after the restoration.

Thorough painting and installation of a lightning conductor:

The mill will undergo a comprehensive painting process to protect it from corrosion and weather damage. Additionally, a lightning conductor will be installed to safeguard the mill and the surrounding area from potential lightning strikes, ensuring the safety of the structure and its environment.

Mechelen’s Vibrant Community: Mill, Maypole, and Mental Health

The mill in Mechelen is special because it’s the only working mill around. People bring grain to be milled there and visitors can see how it’s done. The mill is a popular tourist spot open for visits on Sundays. Next to it is the Pandoerenhoeve, a historic farmhouse where you can relax and have a drink. They even bake traditional bread there twice a month. Unfortunately, the Maypole celebrations planned for May 26, 2024, had to be postponed because of the recent bad weather.

In Mechelen, they’re serious about mental health and stopping bullying. Nearly half of adults have faced bullying and it affects everyone’s well-being. The local government is teaming up with residents to tackle bullying. They’re joining the Stip-It campaign on September 9 and 28 to take a stand.
