Antwerp (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Sixteen bicycles have been recovered by the police in the operation that was carried out in Antwerp North last Sunday. This was made possible by the previous report that had been filed. The area covered in the operation was around Park Spoor Noord and the Atheneumbuurt. Sixteen bicycles were recovered from there, some of which could be traced to their rightful owner.

“We strongly advise everyone to file a report in case of theft. This makes it much easier for us to reunite stolen bicycles and their owners,”

says police spokesperson Kim Bastiaens.

During the same operation, nine mopeds were removed from Park Spoor Noord within an hour.

“After all, it is not permitted to ride a moped there. Furthermore, twenty grams of marijuana were found in the park. No owner could be linked to it. Nuisance and claimant behaviour were also tackled,”

said Bastiaens.

The police also issued administrative penalties for, among other things, alcohol use and searching behaviour. A woman who had a rupture in her possession was arrested.

How has Antwerp police tackled bicycle theft before?

The police in Antwerp have conducted such activities in the past, managing to seize stolen bikes (along with other two-wheeled vehicles) during their activities, particularly in Antwerp-Noord and surrounding areas.  During the month of October 2025, a GPS-tracked bike was seized in Hoboken.  Following the theft of the bike from Berchem, the police traced the bike through the GPS signal of the bike, which was finally discovered in Hoboken, where it was being prepared for export at a transport firm.

In March 2026, A neighbourhood team witnessed a man attempting to sell a costly mountain bike for €170, which is far too low compared to its actual worth. Both men failed to give an explanation as to where they got the mountain bike. The bike was confiscated, and the authorities started looking for its rightful owner.

As for more extensive enforcement against two-wheeler theft/overlast, during July 2026 – Multi-area checks for mopeds/bikes: During two days (26-27 July), the police conducted checks of 225 mopeds/cars and approximately 80 persons in the city hotspot (Damplein/Schijnpoort) and Deurne/Berchem/Borsbeek/Borgerhout.
