Warsaw (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In a TV interview, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said European countries will not create one unified army in response to threats from Moscow.

A day earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy proposed the creation of a European army, stating the continent could no longer be sure of security from the U.S. and would only get consideration from Washington with a powerful military.

The Polish Foreign Minister was questioned about the possibility of the creation of a European army, and he told TVP World that

“we should be careful with this term because people understand different things.”

What does Sikorski propose for Europe’s military future?

If you understand by it the unification of national armies, it will not happen,

he said.

But I have been an advocate for Europe, for the European Union, to develop its own defence capabilities.

He expressed that the European Union was currently developing a reinforced brigade.

“If the U.S. wants us to step up in defence, it should have a national component, a NATO component, but I also believe a European EU component, EU subsidies for the defence industry to build up our capacity to produce, but also an EU force worthy of its name,”

Sikorski stated.

Sikorski restated that having Polish soldiers on the ground in Ukraine was “not a consideration, because Poland’s duty to NATO is to protect the eastern flank, i.e. its own territory”.

How does Sikorski support Ukraine?

Meanwhile, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski has been one of the loudest voices defending Ukraine against Russia. Sikorski has been adamant about defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence against Russian aggression

He thinks that having been invaded numerous times, Poland is obliged to be a firm ally to Ukraine. He sees Russia under Putin as an existential threat to world order and condemns Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a cruel, unprovoked war of aggression.
