Warsaw (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Europe needs its own plan for Ukraine and for its own security, or other powers will decide its future.

“Europe urgently needs its own plan of action concerning Ukraine and our security, or else other global players will decide about our future. Not necessarily in line with our own interest,”

Tusk noted on X.

“This plan must be prepared now. There’s no time to lose.”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has emphasized the importance of European security since taking the EU presidency, which began on January 1, 2025.

How is Poland shaping EU security policy?

Tusk noted that security will be Poland’s top priority while it holds the EU presidency. He emphasized the need for a united, well-prepared security policy to maintain Europe secure and stable.

The Polish administration is dedicated to offering needed aid to Ukraine as it struggles with Russia. It is one piece of a greater plan to expand European defence measures. Tusk emphasized the necessity of strengthening European external borders as well as coping with migration problems. He regards border defence as crucial for European internal security.

The Polish presidency focuses on bolstering European security in several areas, namely external, internal, information, economic, energy, food, and health. This encompasses enhancing defence capabilities through augmented military expenditure as well as backing strategic defence infrastructure initiatives such as East Shield and the Baltic Defence Line.

Donald Tusk has also been actively involved in supporting Ukraine during the ongoing war with Russia. Tusk recently approved the 46th shipment of military aid to Ukraine. The aid was worth over EUR 200 million. This indicates Poland’s determination to support Ukraine’s military defence.
