Antwerp (Brussels Morning) – Alec Geluykens designed a creative bike for his master’s project highlighting Antwerp’s cycling issues through unique features and a humorous approach.

Alec Geluykens really went all out with his master’s thesis project at the Sint Lucas campus of KG in Antwerp. He came up with a unique bicycle design that’s not just any ordinary bike. This bike is like a piece of art that he created to make a statement about the cycling situation in Antwerp.

Biking Beyond Boundaries

The special thing about this bike is that it’s not just about getting from point A to point B. It’s a way for Alec to express his views on Antwerp’s cycling infrastructure. One feature is that he added moped suspensions to the bike. It’s because the cycling paths in Antwerp are often in rough shape so he wanted his bike to handle those bumpy rides.By infusing humor and irony into his design Alec managed to shine a light on the challenges cyclists face in the city.

Geluykens’ project is “BTS_200X: Cycling Critique in Antwerp

Geluykens’ installation tackles the challenges faced by cyclists in Antwerp like lengthy waits at traffic lights and badly kept cycle paths. It also addresses issues such as inconveniently placed buttons for crossing tram tracks and a bike bridge that leads to a steep staircase. These are all aspects of the city’s cycling infrastructure that bicycle design aims to highlight and critique.

Geluykens’ project is called BTS_200X and it’s his master’s project at Sint Lucas University of Applied Sciences in Antwerp. The name stands for “Bike To Survive” (cycling to survive) and the “200X” part refers to the postal codes of Antwerp which typically start with 2000. Geluykens will ride with his bicycle installation on Friday, May 31 during the monthly  Mass event in Antwerp. This event is where cyclists come together to ride through the city streets to advocate for a more bike-friendly city. If you miss the event, you can still see the installation from June 19 to 23 at the end-of-year exhibition at Sint Lucas.
