Oslo (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said his government will soon ask that parliament raises its financial support for Ukraine. “I can say today that we will go back to parliament in the near future with a proposal to increase the support,” public broadcaster NRK.

Norway’s parliament late last year approved to allocate a total of 35 billion Norwegian crowns on military and civilian backing for Ukraine in 2025 and a total of 155 billion crowns in the years from 2023 to 2030.

Moreover, Stoere will have a meeting with European heads and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in London. Zelenskiy’s discussion with U.S. President Donald Trump concluded in disaster, after the two leaders fought in an extraordinary conversation before the world’s media at the White House over the fight with Russia.

What did Stoere say about Norway’s commitment to Ukraine?

Last year in May, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere said that Norway will give 1 billion crowns to strengthen Ukraine’s air defences. The announcement came a day after Norway expressed it would provide Ukraine six F-16 fighter jets.

“The Ukrainians need more air defence to protect their population from Russian bombs and missiles,”

Stoere stated in a statement.

“The brutal attacks we have seen this past week show why it is so vital for the Ukrainians to have greater protection from Russian air attacks,”

He also said.

Norway, with Germany, planned to provide a complete IRIS-T air defence battery to Ukraine, Stoere said. Norway’s government stated its 1 billion crowns will go to Germany’s Immediate Action for Air Defence initiative, to help strengthen Ukraine’s air defences as quickly as possible. In total, Norway had put aside 4 billion crowns to support air defence efforts for Ukraine through 2024, Oslo expressed.
