Ninove (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Mayor Guy D’haeseleer of Ninove returns to work on June 24, 2025, after recovering from hepatitis and a liver transplant. Ilse Malfroot had filled in during his absence.

As VRT News reported, the mayor of Ninove, Guy D’haeseleer, will be back at work on June 24th, 2025. He’s also the leader of the Forza Ninove party. City council chairman Dany Goessens said D’haeseleer sent a letter saying he’ll return.

What does Guy D’haeseleer’s return mean for Ninove?

According to officials, when Guy D’haeseleer returns on June 24th, it’s a big deal for him and Ninove. He’s known for speaking his mind and leading Forza Ninove. His return is expected to bring new energy to local politics. As mayor, he’ll be in charge of the city, public safety, and city council meetings again.

Ilse Malfroot will go back to being an alderwoman. Ilsa mentioned that D’haeseleer’s return might change how the city is run, especially as the council is in the final part of its term. The council meeting on June 24th will deal with regular city business. It will also mark the return of a major political figure who was missed during his time away.

D’haeseleer is also dealing with a legal case about election proxies. He said he is not ready to answer any questions about it yet because he is still going to be recovering from it. He said he’s been through a lot, physically and mentally, just in the past few months. He said he’s going back to work at City Hall but isn’t in any state to deal with the legal stuff right now.

He added he’s returning to politics carefully. He wants to lead the city again, but he knows he still needs to rest and set limits on what he can handle. He’s committed to his job, but he’s also aware of his limits for now.

The mayor had been on medical leave since April 2025, because of a serious health problem. He had hepatitis, which caused his liver to fail, and he needed a transplant. While he was recovering, Ilse Malfroot took over his job to keep the city running.

D’haeseleer said he hoped to return in June 2025, but it depended on his health checks. Doctors were worried about fluid in his lungs, which might have needed more surgery. He got better, and his doctors said he could return to work full-time.
