Nieuwpoort (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In July 2024, a hidden camera was found in the showers at a Sea Scout camp in Beringen. A 45-year-old Nieuwpoort man Voyeur, a scout leader and city worker, secretly filmed adults. Mayor Kris Vandecasteele confirmed his dismissal. Police are finalising the case.

The 45-year-old Nieuwpoort man Voyeur set the camera at the Sea Scouts’ 8th FOS ‘t Vloedgat camp in Beringen to film people at work and their personal life. His lawyer said he is very sorry for what he did and is getting help from a therapist.  She said he is a “broken man” and needs help, but prison isn’t the right place for him to get it.  She said he wants to go home to continue his treatment and take responsibility for what he did.

According to Mayor Kris Vandecasteele, the police are still going ahead with the case because of how serious the charges are and how many people he filmed. He mentioned that the man could face serious consequences in court.  This whole thing has made people talk about the dangers of hidden cameras and the need for better protection at work and in public places.

But I cannot comment on the facts themselves,

says Mayor Kris Vandecasteele (CD&V).

Will Nieuwpoort man (45) face severe penalties for filming adults at Beringen Scout camp?

The man who put the camera in the showers was kicked out of the scouting group. People who were filmed were offered help.  The police said that even though no children were filmed, the people who were filmed were still very upset.

The police in West Flanders are almost done with their investigation and will soon take the man to court. They mentioned that he could get into trouble because of the large number of people he filmed. People are calling for better ways to prevent this kind of thing from happening again.

The man who put the hidden camera in the showers was also worked for the city of Nieuwpoort. The city council fired him right away.  The mayor, Kris Vandecasteele, said the city is helping the police but wouldn’t say more about the case.  The police said the man secretly filmed many people without their permission, both at work and in his personal life.  This is a big problem because it violates people’s privacy.

In July 2024, a hidden camera was found in the showers at a Sea Scout camp in Beringen. The camp was closed and the police were called. The police looked at his computer and other devices and found more hidden camera videos. They mentioned that he had filmed people secretly at the camp and in other places where he worked and lived. All the people in the videos were adults.
