Nawal Ben Hamou, the former Brussels State Secretary for Housing and Equal Opportunities, has been appointed as the new alderman for Housing, Equal Opportunities, Tourism, and Major Events in Brussels. This decision was confirmed by the local PS (Parti Socialiste) on November 26, 2024. Ben Hamou is known for her dedication to social justice and housing policies, and in her new role, she will focus on local issues, using her expertise to help shape the city’s future.

What challenges will Nawal Ben Hamou address as Brussels’ new alderman?

As an alderman, Ben Hamou is expected to tackle key housing issues, such as affordability and availability, while promoting inclusivity in Brussels, one of Europe’s most diverse cities. PS has confidence in her ability to address important challenges in the capital.

The General Assembly has confirmed new roles for city officials. Mayor Philippe Close will stay in his job, and Faouzia Hariche will take on the role of looking after Young Children. Anas Ben Abdelmoumen, a new member of the socialist party, will be in charge of Finance and Public Cleanliness. AnaĂŻs Maes will keep her job overseeing Urban Development and Public Space, and she will also take care of Mobility and Dutch-language Education.
