Zemst (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A motorcyclist sustained life-threatening injuries after an accident occurred on the Tervuursesteenweg in Elewijt within the Zemst municipality. The motorcyclist operated his vehicle at 18:15 in the evening near the Medical Center.

A motorcyclist suffered severe injuries following his collision with a vehicle at Tervuursesteenweg in Elewijt, Zemst, on Sunday evening. A motor vehicle crash happened at 18:15 near the Medical Center following a sudden vehicle turnaround. The motorcyclist received significant injuries that required medical attention from ambulance personnel and MUG responders. Both the driver of the car and the driver of the motorcycle are physically unharmed, and authorities continue investigating the cause of the collision.

“For an unknown reason, a car suddenly turned around without noticing the motorcyclist,”

Says Filip Van Steenbergen, chief of police of the KASTZE police zone (Kampenhout, Steenokkerzeel and Zemst).

“The motorcyclist crashed hard into the side of the car,”

Said Van Steenbergen.

What is the background of road safety in Elewijt and surrounding areas?

The Tervuursesteenweg in Elewijt is a primary thoroughfare within the Flemish Brabant region because traffic intensifies at intersection sites, specifically near Lange Weidestraat and Schumanlaan. Belgian road safety statistics show that intersections and sudden vehicle movements are major contributors to accidents, with motorcyclists as the most affected group.

Yearly traffic accident statistics from the Belgian Road Safety Institute (IBSR) demonstrate that motorcycles represent a major share of people sustaining severe road injuries. The KASTZE police zone responsible for Kampenhout Steenokkerzeel and Zemst previously pointed out that drivers need to be more attentive in busy traffic areas to avoid similar accidents happening again. The recent accident demonstrates ongoing challenges for road safety in this area because similar incidents have occurred previously.
