Morocco would have played a bigger role in the corruption scandal in the European Parliament than was hitherto known. For example, the Moroccan intelligence service DGED is said to be involved at a high level in influencing MEPs, writes the German medium Der Spiegel based on the research documents.

For example, the report states that the DGED was in contact with former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, his assistant Francesco Giorgi and another Italian MEP, Andrea Cozzolino, as early as 2019. The aim was to influence the Socialist Group of the European Parliament in this way.

The Guiding Report of Three Men

According to the report, the current Moroccan ambassador to Poland was responsible for guiding the three men. Der Spiegel writes that he would have handed over envelopes full of money to the suspects. The three Italians also had direct contact with the Director General of the DGED secret service.

Panzeri, Giorgi and his partner Eva Kaili, the deposed Vice-President of the European Parliament and key figure in the Qatargate, were placed in custody together with the Brussels-Italian lobbyist Nicolo Figa-Talamanca.
