MEPs delegation to visit Tanzania for development project review

Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A seven-member delegation of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) serving on the Committee on Development will travel to Tanzania from 24-26 February. The mission will aim to examine the European Union’s investment footprint in Tanzania and the significance of the Global Gateway initiative.

The delegation is led by Committee chair Barry Andrews. The mission will visit projects on sanitation and water, port and economic development, infrastructure, education, gender empowerment, and sustainable fishing.

What is the reason behind the visit of the MEPs to Tanzania?

The MEPs will also meet the Speaker of the National Assembly of Tanzania and the President of the International Parliamentary Union, Hon. Dr. Tulia Ackson. They will also meet with representatives of EU diplomatic missions, development banks, UN agencies, the private sector, local civil society and national development agencies. Among other matters, they will examine sustainable development, inter-parliamentary collaboration and human rights

The Development Committee supervises the EU’s development aid and partnership policies. This fact-finding mission will permit them to consider how EU funds are being used on the ground.

The Committee on Development is responsible for formulating policy on international development and humanitarian aid. It directs EU-sponsored development programs around the globe. Its aim is to ensure that they adhere to sustainability goals and international cooperation efforts.
