European Parliament to begin its first session of 2025

Strasbourg (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – On January 20, 2025, the European Parliament will host its first plenary session of the year with priorities at the table.

President Roberta Metsola is to preside over the plenary session that marks the beginning of this year with the critical agendas.

Agenda Highlights:

  • Work Programme for Polish Presidency of the Council: Debates in the parliament on the work programmes and priorities formulated by Poland at the time of assuming the presidency.
  • Gaza situation: The recent developments in the Gaza situation are to be put into perspective for the parliament before the EU gives its response in this regard.
  • Disinformation/Social Media Platforms: Debates over measures and actions to be taken to stop disinformation spreading through social media platforms.
  • Relations between the European Union and the United States: The session will also discuss themes about the relationship of the European Union with the United States. Areas of cooperation will be discussed concerning a number of current global issues.

The last plenary session of the European Parliament was held between December 16 to December 19, 2024, in Strasbourg. It was crowded with many foreign policy matters and essential debates on the priorities of the European Council. President Roberta Metsola awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to María Corina Machado and Edmundo González Urrutia, Venezuela’s democratic opposition leaders. The Parliament addressed EU priorities on gender equality and the necessity of renewing the EU’s strategy on disability rights.
