“Today, the Georgian Parliament, as an outcome of rigged elections, aims to elect a new president for the government who is far-right and pro-Russian, while the Georgian people are holding protests daily to affirm their dedication to democracy and Europe. All my support goes to Salome Zurabishvili, who represents the aspirations of the Georgian people,” writes the French MEP.
A former soccer player has been nominated as president of Georgia by the ruling party. The ruling Georgian Dream party had won control of Parliament in the South Caucasus nation by succeeding 89 of 150 seats in the October 26 vote widely witnessed as a referendum on integration into the European Union. The opposition groups have blamed Georgian Dream for falsifying the vote with Moscow’s support. It has boycotted parliamentary sessions and insisted on new elections.
