Mechelen (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Work began on the Dahliastraat renewal in Mechelen-Zuid, led by Alderman Patrick Princen. The project will improve safety, add green spaces, install new sewers, and finish by March 2026.

As VRT News reported, work to renew Dahliastraat in Mechelen-Zuid started a week ago. The plan includes installing a new sewer system that separates rainwater from wastewater. The street will also be redesigned to make it safer and more comfortable. Improvements include wider sidewalks, safer places to cross, better lighting, and a street layout that supports walking and cycling while reducing traffic risks.

How will Mechelen-Zuid’s Dahliastraat renewal improve safety and green spaces by 2026?

Besides technical upgrades and safety measures, the project adds more green areas. Patrick Princen, Alderman for Public Works from Voor Mechelen, says the street will be safer and more inviting.

The redevelopment of Dahliastraat will take place in 3 separate phases. During this period, Stuvas Ruzal will not be open to any car traffic to preserve completeness and allow for unobstructed construction.

In this first phase, Kruisvelstraat will also potentially be closed for vehicles, but it is open from both directions up to the worksite. To manage traffic flow, a detour will be set up via Tervuursesteenweg. Starting in September 2025, residents will be able to use a parking lot behind the Geerdegemvaart municipal swimming pool.

The city expects the work on Dahliastraat to be finished by the end of March 2026. Officials emphasise that the project is an important step to improve local infrastructure and quality of life in Mechelen-Zuid.

A similar redevelopment project took place a few years ago in Mechelen’s Zuid district on Doornstraat. There, the city also replaced old sewer systems with separate rainwater and wastewater networks and redesigned the street
