Mechelen (The brussels morning Newspaper): Mechelen holds a “beauty pageant for trees” where residents can nominate their favorite trees until October 6, celebrating the city’s greenery and encouraging appreciation for local trees.

Mechelen is holding a special competition that some call a “beauty pageant for trees.” Residents can nominate their favorite trees until October 6. Anyone living in Mechelen can join in and pick any tree from the city, whether it’s in a park, on the street, or in a private garden. Nominations can be sent through the city’s official website, where people can explain why their chosen tree should be recognized, highlighting things like its beauty, history, or personal importance.

Which tree will be Mechelen most beautiful?

It has been said that This initiative is meant to celebrate the beauty and cultural value of trees in the city, helping residents connect with their local environment. By showcasing both famous trees and lesser-known ones, the competition encourages people to appreciate the greenery in the city. It reminds everyone how important trees are for making the city more beautiful and for Mechelen’s green heritage.

Patrick Princen, the alderman for nature and green development, encourages everyone to take a moment to look around their own neighborhood, parks, or gardens and nominate their most beautiful tree. He believes that every tree has its own charm and story, and finding a favorite can help celebrate the natural beauty in our surroundings. By participating in this nomination process, people can help highlight trees that are not only lovely but also meaningful to the community.Last year, a summer lime tree on Pastor de Heuckstraat was named the most beautiful tree. Patrick Princen, who takes care of nature and green spaces, said the tree is special because of its lovely leaves and its spot next to the Sint-Anna Kapel in Leest. He mentioned that the winner has a story, like a love story or a historical one, which makes it even more meaningful. Princen encourages everyone to look around their neighborhoods and nominate their favorite trees. The winner will get a 50 euro voucher from Boom Zoekt Grond Compaign the Boom Zoekt Grond Campaign  to buy more trees, helping to make the city greener.
