Maldegem (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The new youth site, led by Alderman Marten De Jaeger, will focus on local groups like Chiro and Gidsen Gertrude, featuring an L-shaped design to minimize noise. Construction is expected to finish by 2027.

The new youth site was first planned as a place for big events. But now, the focus has changed. It will be a space for local youth groups like Chiro, Gidsen Gertrude, Jeugdatelier Oranje, and Jeugdwerk voor anderstaligen. The building will have an L-shaped design.

Officials mentioned that this design will help reduce noise from the nearby houses. It keeps the outdoor play area away from the homes. They mentioned that this way, kids can play without bothering the neighbours. The new site will also have an indoor play area.

What features will the new youth site in Malfegem include by 2027?

According to authorities, besides the indoor play area, the new place will have a big outdoor field. This field will give plenty of space for sports, activities, and community events. They mentioned that the site is not just a building; it will be a hub for the community. Youth groups will have a central spot to meet, plan events, and build friendships among their members.

They mentioned that the facility will provide a safe and easy-to-reach place for kids and young people. They can enjoy social activities and learn important skills. Officials believe that this new development is a big step in helping the youth in the area and encouraging active lifestyles and community involvement. Alderman Marten De Jaeger wants it to be a “blue-green pearl” in the area.

“The new site will also be an oasis of peace, there will be more greenery, water and a new walking path and everyone can go there to enjoy the resting place. It will become, so to speak, a ‘blue-green pearl’ of our municipality”,

Says alderman Marten De Jaeger (CD&V).

The municipality plans to add 2 wadis. Alderman Marten mentioned that these systems will help with stormwater and let water soak into the ground. They will also open up the watercourse that runs through the site. This will create a larger green space and a big forested area.

He mentioned that the new green space will be a nice place for people to relax. It will also help the environment by improving the local ecosystem. The municipality hopes to start major construction in the autumn. They expect the new building and area to be ready to open by 2027.

“The area is water-rich, so we are providing 2 wadis (Water Drainage Infiltration). The watercourse on that site will also be opened up, creating a large green area and forest where everyone can relax.”

Alderman Marten De Jaeger (CD&V).
