Lokeren (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Willy Linthout and Ann Smet launched their new comic series Familie Super at a signing event, raising funds to donate 753 comics and €300 to Heiende primary school, promoting reading among children.
Willy Linthout, a well-known comic artist famous for his Urbanus comics, has teamed up with writer Ann Smet for a new comic series called Familie Super. Last Sunday on 13th October, they held a signing event where fans could meet them and buy their comics. The event also aimed to help others, as all the money raised was used to purchase 753 comic books, which they donated to Heiende Primary School.
How can Willy Linthout and Ann Smet inspire kids to love comics?
This kind of donation aimed to inspire young students to enjoy comics and develop a love for reading. Linthout and Smet provided the school with many books, which will improve the children’s reading experience. Their effort to promote reading and creativity shows how much they believe in the positive impact of storytelling on education.
In addition to the 753 comics, the school received a check for 300 euros to improve its library. Willy Linthout mentioned that many school libraries have very few books, and at Heiende Primary School, there were only about fifty. He noted that comics are not as popular as they used to be, as they are rarely found in newspapers, and kids are often distracted by their smartphones. However, Linthout observed that kids are still excited about comics. He said that when they displayed the comics in the school canteen, the children immediately showed interest and enjoyed looking through them. He believes that while kids like comics, they need a little encouragement to pay attention to them.
