On the 11th, of September Wednesday morning around 10:00, some pieces of lime fell from a protected building on Gulden Vlieslaan in Bruges, making the area dangerous. The debris landed on the sidewalk and part of the road, almost hitting people and cars passing by. No one got hurt, but it worried residents and visitors. The falling pieces damaged a parked car, breaking its windshield. It has been said that this incident shows how hard it is to maintain old buildings, as weather and wear can create unexpected risks.

How will Bruges address safety after lime falls from a heritage building?

Emergency services quickly arrived and blocked off the area to keep everyone safe and stop more accidents. They temporarily closed the sidewalk and part of the road for people and cars while checking the damage. City building inspectors were probably called to look at the condition of the building and find out why the lime fell, focusing on whether there were any weaknesses in the structure or outside factors that caused it.

It has been said that steps will be taken to fix and secure the building’s facade to stop similar incidents from happening again. This highlights how important it is to regularly maintain and inspect old heritage buildings. The city building inspector mentioned that this situation reminds us that preserving historical buildings is complicated, as it involves balancing keeping their beauty with meeting modern safety standards.
