Oudsbergen (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A 37-year-old adult died under suspicious circumstances at De Oudsberg nature reserve in Oudsbergen, according to the Limburg public prosecutor’s office. Police arrested a thirty-six-year-old woman who called emergency services following the investigation.

The Limburg public prosecutor’s office has started investigating the suspected fatal accident of a 37-year-old male found at De Oudsberg nature reserve located in Oudsbergen. A 36-year-old woman contacted emergency services early in the morning to report the death before she was arrested and will stand before an investigating judge tomorrow. The authorities view this incident as an uncommon death since forensic specialists investigate the event to establish what caused it.

The police at the CARMA zone received reports of an injured person at 5:30 AM located near the De Oudsberg nature reserve. Emergency service personnel began resuscitation efforts on the victim when officers located him as an injured 37-year-old male. The physician who worked for MUG declared the male victim deceased. The unknown nature of the situation between natural death and criminal action required the standard procedures for investigating unusual deaths.

A forensic pathologist and a forensic team from the Limburg public prosecutor’s office came to examine the scene after it had been secured. The authorities announced today that they had detained the woman who came forward to report the incident when she was 36 years old.

What is the crime rate in Limburg?

In 2022, Limburg province documented 16,832 criminal offences based on Belgian federal police records. Recently recorded violent crimes, together with homicides, made up 4.3% of total case numbers in 2023 while showing a slight reduction when compared to earlier years.

The CARMA police zone based in Oudsbergen, together with nearby areas, reported 1,245 criminal offences during 2023, while previous homicide events had been limited to just two throughout the last five years. The De Oudsberg nature reserve shows exceptionally low rates of criminal activity, thus making this death exceptionally exceptional.

The homicide rate in Belgium measures 1.8 per 100,000 citizens, which falls below the standard set by the E.U. The process of investigating unusual deaths in this area progresses slowly during standard forensic investigations until teams from Leuven join their local counterparts to provide help.

Under Belgian law, the arrested woman’s legal information remains undisclosed during the judicial assessment process, which takes place within 24 hours after her detention for serious crimes. The Limburg province has experienced several previous incidents of a similar nature, including a domestic violence-related death that led to quick prosecutions in Genk during 2021.
