Kortenaken (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The city, led by Alderman Caroline Torbeyns, offers free asbestos removal help with 8-bag containers, safety gear, and expert “asbestos coaches” for residents, businesses, and schools.
Kortenaken, a municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant, Belgium, is making it easier for people to remove asbestos from their homes safely. Alderman for the Environment, Caroline Torbeyn, has announced a new program to help people get rid of asbestos.
The city is offering special containers for people to put asbestos waste in. These containers are big enough to hold up to 8 bags or 2 full containers of asbestos each year. This is enough to remove a lot of asbestos from a roof, about 480 square meters.
The city hopes this will make it easier for people to fix their homes and remove asbestos without putting themselves or the environment at risk. They want to make it easier for people to do the right thing and keep everyone safe.
How is Kortenaken making asbestos removal safer and easier?
The city wants to make sure everyone is safe when removing asbestos. Before anyone can have their asbestos taken away, a special “asbestos coach” will visit their home. This coach is trained to teach people how to safely pack and get rid of asbestos.
They also give people special bags and protective gear like gloves, masks, and suits. The coach takes care of the paperwork and payment right there. Officials mentioned that this way, people don’t have to worry about doing things wrong or putting themselves in danger.
According to the officials, anyone in the city who needs to remove asbestos can use the special service, including regular people, small businesses, schools, and community groups. It doesn’t matter if people own a house or a school building.
If they live in one of the cities that are part of the program, they can apply online. They just need to fill out a form on the website of EcoWerf and tell them what kind of asbestos they have, how much of it there is, and where it is located.
Officials mentioned that after applying, someone from the city will contact them within a month to set up a visit to their home or building. They will check things out, teach them how to stay safe, and give them the special equipment they need.
They will also take care of the payment for getting rid of the asbestos. If people have any questions or need more help, they can talk to the city’s environmental department. They can explain everything to them.
