Brussels (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said that conditions demanded by Russia to initiate a ceasefire in the war in Ukraine indicate that Moscow does not really want peace.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump stated that he planned to hold a meeting on call tomorrow with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Reuters reported. According to him, they will talk about “land”, “nuclear power plants” and “separation of unspecified assets”, the world agency specified.

“I will talk to Putin on Tuesday. A lot of work was done over the weekend”,

Trump told reporters aboard the presidential plane during a late flight from the US state of Florida to Washington.

“We want to see if we can end the war. Maybe we can, maybe we can’t, but I think we have a very good chance”,

The US president stated.

What are EU leaders doing to prepare for Trump-Putin talks?

As the United States prepares for Tuesday’s call between Trump and Putin, European leaders are rushing to prepare for what’s coming next, worrying any sort of unexpected and potentially controversial settlements from Trump.

European Union foreign ministers are gathering this morning in Brussels to examine what else they can do to help Ukraine. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas sought to increase pressure on Russia as she reached for the meeting this morning, urging that “the ball is in Russia’s court and what kind of conditions they are presenting, which is [a] big question whether they want peace.”

“Those conditions that they have presented, it shows that they don’t really want peace, actually, because they are presenting as conditions all the ultimate goals that they want to achieve from this war,”

She warned.

Why does Kallas believe Russia has no interest in peace?

A week ago, the EU foreign policy chief expressed that Putin has ‘no interest in peace.’ Russian leader Vladimir Putin “has no interest in peace”, the European Union’s foreign policy chief stated on March 8, 2025, after overnight attacks by Moscow’s troops killed at least 14 people in Ukraine.

Kaja Kallas noted:

“Russian missiles keep relentlessly falling on Ukraine, bringing more death and more destruction. Once again, Putin shows he has no interest in peace. We must step up our military support – otherwise, even more Ukrainian civilians will pay the highest price.”
