Florida (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has made her way to the US and had a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at his Mar-a-Lago Florida resort.
The Mar-a-Lago resort’s members received Meloni with warm welcomes after an introduction by the president-elect, reported Reuters. Her visit comes days before she is to interact with U.S. President Joe Biden during a visit to Rome from Thursday to Jan. 12.
According to Euronews, Trump watched a screening of a documentary addressing the difficulties faced by some conservative lawyers within the legal system.
This is very exciting,
Trump told the gathered crowd, referring to Meloni,
I’m here with a fantastic woman, the prime minister of Italy. She’s really taken Europe by storm, and everyone else, and we’re just having dinner tonight,
he noted.
What issues were reportedly on Meloni’s discussion agenda?
The president-elect attended the documentary with Meloni, as well as his candidate for Secretary of State in the upcoming administration, Florida Senator Marco Rubio, and Florida Representative Mike Waltz, whom Trump has chosen as national security adviser. While no specifics about their meeting have been revealed, Meloni had planned to discuss with Trump topics such as Russia’s war in Ukraine, trade issues, the Middle East and the situation of an Italian journalist imprisoned in Tehran, according to Italian media reports.
What previous engagements have linked Meloni and Trump?
Giorgia Meloni, Italy’s Prime Minister, has not only recently visited Mar-a-Lago but also had several other important engagements with Donald Trump. Meloni has always been very appreciative of the political style and policies pursued by Trump. She has particularly appreciated his stand on issues such as immigration and national sovereignty. Her party’s platform is similar to his populist rhetoric, making her a good ally in Europe. In December 2024, Meloni dined alongside both Trump and Elon Musk in a high-profile dinner hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace.
