Although the agency recently determined that an earlier laboratory finding was a false positive, investigators said traceback records and epidemiological evidence continue to identify the recalled lettuce as the likely source of illnesses. Federal officials are working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health agencies to monitor the outbreak and ensure affected products are removed from the market.
FDA Investigation Continues After Laboratory Review
The FDA said additional laboratory analysis showed that an earlier sample previously believed to contain Cyclospora did not produce a confirmed positive result. Despite this update, officials said distribution records, supply chain data and interviews with patients continue to support the connection between shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico and reported illnesses.
The company voluntarily recalled affected iceberg lettuce products distributed to restaurants and retailers across several U.S. states.
Recalled Lettuce Remains Off Store Shelves
The recall includes shredded iceberg lettuce supplied to selected Taco Bell restaurants and certain retail products sold through Walmart under the Marketside brand. Consumers are advised not to eat recalled lettuce and should dispose of affected products or return them to the place of purchase.
Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and fatigue. Health officials recommend seeking medical advice if symptoms develop after consuming recalled products.
Food Safety Measures Continue
Federal investigators are continuing traceback analysis and product testing to determine the precise source of contamination. The FDA says it will provide additional updates as new information becomes available while working with industry partners to protect public health.
