Wavre, Belgium, 28 August (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Australia’s Hockeyroos World Cup title challenge has ended after Argentina secured a tense 1-0 semi-final victory at the Belfius Hockey Arena. The result sends Argentina into the final and leaves Australia preparing for a bronze-medal match against Belgium.
Why did the Hockeyroos lose to Argentina?
Australia matched Argentina for much of the 60-minute contest, with neither side able to score during the opening three quarters. Argentina hit the post from an early penalty corner, while Australian goalkeeper Jocelyn Bartram prevented the follow-up from producing the opening goal.
The Hockeyroos also threatened after half-time, with Grace Stewart going close before Argentina’s goalkeeper stopped her effort. However, Argentina eventually broke the deadlock through a well-executed penalty-corner variation in the final quarter.
Australia immediately won consecutive penalty corners but could not convert either opportunity. With three minutes remaining, Bartram was withdrawn to give Australia an additional field player, but Argentina’s disciplined defence protected its 1-0 advantage.
Hockey Australia described the performance as featuring “fight, defensive resilience and attacking intent”, saying the Hockeyroos continued pushing until the final whistle.
Argentina had already demonstrated its defensive strength during the tournament. After securing its semi-final place with a 3-0 victory over Spain, Player of the Match Sofia Cairo said: “I think it was the defence. It was all the team.”
What will Australia face after the semi-final defeat?
The defeat ends Australia’s attempt to reach the World Cup final, but the Hockeyroos still have an opportunity to leave the tournament with a medal.
Their progress to the last four followed a difficult campaign. Australia secured its semi-final position after a goalless draw with India, a match in which the Hockeyroos recorded 13 shots on goal compared with India’s one.
The result against Argentina means Australia must quickly shift its attention from disappointment to the bronze-medal contest.

Australia will face Belgium in the bronze-medal match, with Hockey Australia confirming a 9pm AEST start on Saturday. Victory would allow the Hockeyroos World Cup campaign to end with a podium finish despite missing out on the final.
Argentina will move on to the championship match after its narrow victory, while Australia’s immediate challenge is recovering physically and mentally before facing the Belgian hosts for third place.
