Hasselt (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Serge Delvaux, leader of the Voor U party, will not appeal the Council of State’s ruling on election stickers, aiming to maintain the merger with Kortessem. Concerns were raised about election materials near polling stations, causing delays in the merger process, originally set for January 21.

Serge Delvaux, the leader of the Voor U party, has decided not to challenge the Council of State’s ruling regarding his complaint about the election results. He aims to keep the merger process on track. Delvaux raised concerns about N-VA-Open VLD members being too close to polling stations with their election posters. Vera Vrancken, a candidate from Voor U, reported seeing cars with election stickers while voting and expressed feeling threatened, criticizing the police for their slow response. Another Voor U candidate mentioned that a bicycle with election stickers was left at a polling station for a long time.

Will Hasselt’s merger with Kortessem proceed after Delvaux’s election ruling decision?

Serge Delvaux, the leader of the Voor U party, won’t appeal a recent decision about election stickers on cars. The Council said there are no rules against cars with stickers being parked near polling places, even though there are rules for posters. They also said the stickers didn’t change the election results in Hasselt. Delvaux was disappointed and felt it was important, but he decided not to take it further to keep things running smoothly in the city and its merger with Kortessem.

Hasselt and Kortessem’s planned merger faced a setback as the Council of State paused the process following a complaint. Mayor Steven Vandeput expressed relief, emphasizing the importance of moving forward without disruption. The delay could impact the new city council’s installation, originally set for January 2, creating uncertainty for residents. Meanwhile, local political groups continue to strategise for upcoming events, aiming to ensure a smooth transition despite the challenges.
