Hasselt (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Renovation works are ongoing at Hasselt’s ‘t Scheep as seven mirror panels on the town hall are replaced. The maintenance is expected to finish by week’s end.

Hasselt‘s contemporary municipal hall on Limburgplein will replace seven mirrored panels on its high sloping wall as a precaution.

Since Wednesday morning, an aerial work platform has been in operation in Limburgplein, Belgium

“It’s become clear that the mirror panels have suffered from weather conditions over the years, meaning they need to be replaced,”

explains Laurence Libert (Open VLD), Alderman for Buildings.

“There’s no danger at the moment, but we want to prevent this from leading to dangerous situations. Therefore, we’re replacing these panels as a precaution.”

The shattered glasswork, including the window on the police headquarters, will be replaced in addition to the mirror panels. For the rest of the week, the work will go on.

What is the historical significance of Hasselt’s city hall ‘t Scheep’ in its design?

The renovated historic neoclassical police barracks, known locally as “Kezerreme,” is a part of the new city hall complex, which directly connects the city’s 19th-century architectural legacy with modern municipal operations.

A conversation between tradition and contemporary urban life is represented by the seven-story new building’s design and glass-slanted façade, which signify progress and forward mobility while overlooking the historic district and providing expansive views and ever-changing reflections of the cityscape.

Framing the city hall as a “citizen’s home” that promotes accessibility and social participation, the new building’s slanting façade reflects the public plaza around it, encouraging openness and community interaction.

The design highlights Hasselt’s development without erasing its past by using sustainable elements like solar panels and geothermal installations, which link contemporary environmental responsibility with the preservation of historical elements.
