Hasselt (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Hasselt offers new residents a refund for car-sharing start-up costs with Cambio and Cozywheels. Alderman Kevin Schouterden promotes the scheme, valid until December 15, 2025, to boost sustainable mobility.

As VRT News reported, Hasselt residents who register as new users of car-sharing services such as Cambio or Cozywheels will temporarily receive a refund for their initial startup costs. Car sharing allows several people or households to use the same vehicle. Users do not have to pay for insurance, maintenance, or parking.

What is Hasselt doing to boost car sharing for new users?

Officials mentioned that fewer private cars on the streets helps reduce traffic congestion and free up parking spaces. They said that it also lowers carbon emissions, which supports cleaner air and a healthier city. The scheme applies to new users of services such as Cambio and Cozywheels.

Kevin Schouterden, Hasselt’s Alderman for Mobility (Vooruit), said the initiative allows residents to try car sharing without paying the initial fees.

“By temporarily reimbursing the start-up costs for car sharing, we’re making car sharing more accessible than ever,”

He said. The offer is only available to residents of Hasselt. Registration for the reimbursement must be completed before December 15, 2025.

Hasselt’s car-sharing experience began in the early 2000s with the introduction of Cambio, a round-trip car-sharing service. In 2018, the city introduced a new mode of shared mobility called Cozywheels, a platform in which residents share vehicles for rent with adjacent neighbours, sharing and local organisations. In 2024, Hasselt began a short-term program to reimburse the start-up costs for residents using Cambio and Cozywheels.
