Hagelandse (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – The Walking event Hagelandse 101 is now Hagelandse 106 (106 km) and Hagelandse 60 (60 km). A try-out walk (38.5 km) will be organize on June 8, 2025, in Aarschot. 5,000 spots available. Jo Langela organizes.

The walking event Hagelandse 101, Belgium, in the provinces of Flemish Brabant and Limburg, a long walk from Leuven to Scherpenheuvel-Zichem, is having its 5th year.  The organizers are making some changes because of the number 5. The long walk is now 106 kilometres, 5 kilometres longer than before.

The shorter walk is now 60 kilometres, 5 kilometres longer than before.  Officials mentioned that more people can walk this year. There are 5,000 spots instead of 3,000. The walk goes through hills. They said it can be hard for people used to walking on flat ground.

How is the Hagelandse 106 and 60 walking event changing this year?

The Hagelandse 101 is adding a new part this year.  There will be a try-out walk so people can see how hard the hills are. Officials mentioned that some walkers haven’t been ready for the hills before, especially people from flat areas.

According to Jo Langela, one of the organisers, the try-out will help people get ready. The organisers want everyone to enjoy the walk, but they also want it to be challenging. He mentioned that the try-out will help walkers get ready for the hills so they can enjoy the walk.

“We received comments from participants in the Hagelandse 101 that they were shocked by the characteristics of the Hageland,”

says organizer Jo Langela.

“Some participants come from the coast or participate in the Dodentocht, but it is as flat as a pancake there, and they are shocked by the hills in the Hageland.”

The organisers want people to practice for the main walk. They mentioned that the try-out walk is different from the main walk, but it’s just as hard. It’s 38.5 kilometres long, so people can see how fit they are. Organizers said that the try-out also lets people see the beautiful town of Aarschot, which they wouldn’t see during the night on the main walk.

Walkers can practice, on a custom-made course, which is different from the Hagelandse 106 and 60 that take place in September, but which are just as tough,

Jo adds.

There’s a new try-out walk on June 8th, 2025.  The try-out starts and ends in Aarschot.  It’s for people who want to practice walking on the hills in the Hageland region.  The try-out is open to 1,000 people, and 400 spots are already taken. Officials mentioned that anyone can join, even if they aren’t doing the main walk in September 2025.

According to officials, people are signing up fast.  There’s room for 5,000 walkers, which is more than last year.  Over 3,500 spots are already filled.  They mentioned that if people want to walk, they should sign up soon.
