Glabbeek (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – Glabbeek will build 14 affordable homes on the old library site, sold for €866,000, led by Mayor Peter Reekmans. Despite delays, the goal is 51 homes by year-end.

The municipality of Glabbeek, Belgium is planning to demolish the old library building. The site will be used to build new affordable homes. There will be 2 buildings with a total of 14 homes. This is part of the municipality’s plan to build more social housing.

Officials mentioned that the new homes would help address the local demand for affordable housing. The demolition of the old library is also a way to revitalise underused municipal infrastructure.

How is Glabbeek progressing on its 51 affordable homes plan?

Glabbeek is building new affordable homes in different parts of the municipality. This is because they want to spread out the homes and not just build them in one place. They want to make sure everyone has a place to live, no matter where they live in Glabbeek. They are building new homes in Bunsbeek, Glabbeek (center), and Kapellen.

One of the new projects is called ‘het Melkroosveld’. It will be built behind the town hall in Glabbeek. Construction is expected to start later this year. Another project is called ‘het Baekveld’ in Bunsbeek. The permit for this project has already been granted. Glabbeek wants to make sure that everyone has access to quality, affordable housing.

“Two residents continue to exhaust all procedural possibilities and went to the Council of Permit Disputes against this,”

Says Sterkendries.

Fortunately, that was the very last procedural step that could be taken in this file.”

The Flemish government has told Glabbeek to build 51 new affordable homes by the end of the year. Officials mentioned that this is a big task for Glabbeek, and they could be fined if they don’t meet this goal.

Glabbeek has already done all the planning for these new homes, but there are some delays. These delays are caused by paperwork and other things that are not in Glabbeek’s control.  Despite these delays, Glabbeek is committed to building these new homes.

Glabbeek sold their old library for over 866,000 euros. Mayor Peter Reekmans says this money will be used to fix up the town hall. He also says the money will help them build new affordable homes. Glabbeek also owns part of Kanvaz, the company building the new homes.
