Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper): Ghent, the European Youth Capital 2024, invested nearly €2 million in youth programs and funded 73 projects with €350,000. Mayor Mathias De Clercq supports youth empowerment, and Evita Willaert, who will take over in January, aims to improve mental health support for young people.
Every year, a European city is named the youth capital to recognize its efforts for young people. Ghent used this title to organize 300 activities, starting with a big party in February at about 20 locations. One highlight was the Asfalt Festival, focusing on urban sports, which drew 35,000 visitors. Another event was the Great Debate for first-time voters, attended by the king.

Ghent has put almost 2 million euros into its youth capital programs, with some money going to projects suggested by young people. A group of young judges picked 73 projects that got 350,000 euros. Emma Van Iseghem, who listened to young people’s stories, said they have great ideas but often need help finding money and support. The year will end with a closing show on December 6th and a debate on December 7th, where 50 young people will talk with political leaders. Alderman Hafsa El-Bazioui said it’s important to give better support to youth projects.
Evita Willaert, who will replace El-Bazioui on January 7, says we need to focus more on young people’s mental health. On the last day of the event, young people will share their stories, and there will be podcasts and documentaries. A big waffle-baking event will also take place. The year as ‘European Youth Capital’ will end with a party in the Winter Circus.
