How did Ghent’s Vlasmarkt transform during this year’s festivities?
At the Vlasmarkt things usually get wild with lots of drinking, mess, fights and drama.During the Ghent Festivities everything was peaceful and organized. At the event there were people keeping an eye on things at different spots to make sure everything was cool and solve any problems. They didn’t need to do much at the Vlasmarkt because everyone was behaving well and the vibe was chill. It was a big change from the usual Vlasmarkt chaos making this year’s festivities more enjoyable and organized.
“This morning was different,” say Eray and Aria. “It’s not a big surprise since many people might have work today. We thought some things might happen later, but for now, we’re enjoying the good vibes.” “I’m so tired from scout camp,” says a girl resting on the ground. “But I really wanted to be here last night.” At the Vlasmarkt, it’s a tradition to end a night at the Ghent Festivities with Irish Coffee (hot coffee with whisky and whipped cream) but the Italian Coffee (with Amaretto) was a hit this morning too. “Having the Italian one now, and maybe the Scottish one later,” they said. “It’s always a good time for chess,” say the folks wrapping up the Ghent Festivities with a game.
The city of Ghent thinks about 1.7 million party animals showed up but the official numbers aren’t out yet.
