Ghent (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): A truck dropped leaking paraffin containers on a bridge creating a hazardous situation. Firefighters and civil protection teams quickly managed the spill closing the bridge for cleanup and raising safety concerns.

When a truck was going over a bridge it dropped four small liquid containers. Two of them with a paraffin product inside began to leak. The spilled liquid made the road dangerous for drivers. The paraffin dripped down into the ditch under the bridge making the cleanup even harder. The paraffin on the road and in the ditch is worrying because it can be dangerous and harm the environment. It has been said that on the road it could cause accidents so it needs quick action to keep drivers safe. In the ditch it might hurt animals and water quality so a detailed check and cleanup are needed to fix any harm done.

How did emergency teams respond to the paraffin spill on the Bridge?

When the firefighters got there they started dealing with the spilled paraffin liquid. Even though it wasn’t toxic it was still dangerous so they acted fast. They put long absorbent sausages on the road where the liquid spilled. These sausages are designed to soak up liquids and stop the paraffin from spreading more. Besides the firefighters the civil protection team was called to help clean up. They worked together to make sure everything was well-organized and to take the right steps to deal with the contamination on the road and in the ditch. The fire department and civil protection team joined forces to handle the spill well and reduce any possible dangers from the accident.

To clean up the spilled paraffin properly they had to close the bridge to all traffic. This was done so they could put the absorbent materials in the right place and clean up the liquid well. It will take a few hours to finish the job because they need to clean both the road and the ditch under the bridge. The problem with the new bridge in Drongen is that it’s too narrow making it hard for big trucks to pass through. This incident has made people talk more about whether the bridge can handle large vehicles and if changes are needed to make traffic flow better and avoid problems like this in the future.
