Ghent 55-year-old night shop owner dies after stabbing

Ghent (Brussels Morning newspaper) –  A 55-year-old night shop owner in Ghent was stabbed on January 15, 2025, and died on January 17, 2025. The police are conducting an investigation.

On January 15, 2025, the man was stabbed and died on January 17, 2025. Doctors failed to save him because his injuries were too severe. Citizens identified him because he runs the night shop.

Police have not ended the case of investigations. To this day, they do not know why someone has committed the crime and what had actually happened at that time. The neighbourhood, which is usually calm, is now dealing with the effects of this violent event.

What happened in the Ghent stabbing case?

The incidents inside the house on Joachim Schayckstraat are still not clear. Investigators are working hard to find out what happened. The public prosecutor’s office of East Flanders is taking the details very seriously because the case is still open.

The authorities determined no motive and no suspects. It’s unclear why the 55-year-old man faced this stabbing. The spokeswoman of the prosecutor’s office reported that experts will be given the body of the victim. This examination could give important clues about the attack. It will help to understand the situation better.

The police are still investigating and trying to find out who is responsible. No arrests have been made yet. Fear of what happened affects people. Officials were cautious in their statements and did not reveal many details.

“The victim’s body will be thoroughly examined by an expert,” says a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office. “We are also working on identifying those involved, but no arrests have been made yet.”

Neighbours said they did not know the resident of the house very well. One neighbour mentioned that “the shutters are always down, so you could not see what was happening there.” Another neighbour shared their feelings, saying, “It was a shock because it is normally always quiet here.” People are trying to understand how something could happen in their neighbourhood. 

On Wednesday night, January 15, 2025, in Ghent, a 55-year-old man was stabbed and seriously injured. His neighbours knew him as the owner of a night shop. He lived in Joachim Schayckstraat, a quiet street close to the Zwijnaarde castle, for five years. 

Residents called the police at 11:30 p.m. They quickly called emergency medical services. The man was taken to the hospital critically injured. Police began investigating what had transpired during the stabbing.
