Ghent: 5 youths assault woman on Gaardenierspad trail

Ghent (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – In Ghent’s Bloemekenswijk, 5 youths attacked a woman on the Gaardenierspad trail. She escaped, got help at UZ Gent, and police are investigating. Witnesses are urgently sought.

As VRT News reported, in Ghent‘s Bloemekenswijk, a woman was attacked by 5 youths while cycling. The attackers pulled her off her bike and sexually assaulted her, groping her and trying to remove her clothes. 

The woman escaped and reported the attack to her partner, then to the police. She received medical and psychological help at the University Hospital Ghent’s Centre for Sexual Violence. The police and public prosecutor are now investigating the case.

What steps are being taken after the Ghent assault to ensure public safety and find the attackers?

According to officials, following the assault, an investigation has begun, but few details about the attackers are known. Investigators are asking for witnesses who saw anything suspicious on the Gaardenierspad trail that night to come forward. The incident has worried locals and raised safety concerns, especially for women. Police patrols have increased, and the city is urged to improve safety measures like lighting and surveillance.

The woman attacked in Ghent’s Bloemekenswijk escaped her attackers. She received medical and psychological help at UZ Gent’s Sexual Violence Care Centre and reported the assault to the police.
