Genk (The Brussels Morning Newspaper): The €2.5 million Noordlaan project in Genk, led by mobility alderman Karel Kriekemans, will upgrade the cycle path and bus stops for improved safety and accessibility, starting after autumn approvals.

The Noordlaan in Genk is a popular route for cyclists and an important part of the local bike path network. However, the cycle path has gotten worse over time, so it needs a full upgrade. As part of a bigger project to improve the area’s roads, the cycle path will soon be renovated to make it safer and more enjoyable for cyclists.

What upgrades are planned for the Noordlaan cycle path and bus stops in Genk?

Along with the improvements to the cycle path, the bus stops on Noordlaan will also be upgraded to make them more accessible, especially for people with reduced mobility. The aim is to enhance public transportation along this route and ensure it meets modern accessibility standards. This includes better pavement, improved shelters, and easier access for wheelchairs and strollers. These upgrades will not only improve safety and comfort for cyclists and public transport users but also enhance the overall transportation infrastructure in Genk.

According to Karel Kriekemans, the mobility alderman, they are improving the cycle path on Zonhoverweg to make it safer for cyclists and adding a new Hoppinpunt at the Winterslag Spoorwegstraat stop for easier transport connections. They will also build new footpaths between the Boxbergstraat roundabout and the Eikenlaan intersection. During the work, they promise to protect nature by using special panels to keep the trees and their roots safe, making sure to disturb as little as possible while still making these important improvements.

Project to upgrade the cycle path along Noordlaan in Genk is almost finished. In October and November, the team will check and approve the final design to secure funding from the Bicycle Fund for local cycling projects. After getting this approval, they will send the project plan to the city council for final approval in the autumn, which is crucial for starting the project with the necessary money and permissions. The total cost is around 2.5 million euros, covering the complete renovation of the cycle path and upgrades to bus stops along the route. The goal is to enhance cycling safety and improve public transport, particularly for those with mobility challenges. With the project nearing completion, construction is expected to start soon after the approvals are in place, bringing significant improvements to Genk’s transportation system.
