Genk knife incident: Suspect escapes after attack on older man

Genk (Brussels Morning Newspaper): A man in Limburg demanded mobile phones from bystanders. After an older man refused, the suspect, armed with a knife, attacked him but fled on a bus. The police are investigating, and Mayor Wim Dries confirmed they have identified the suspect.

Eyewitnesses reported a situation where a man asked several people to use their mobile phones. An older man refused, and the suspect became angry and aggressive. A teenager who witnessed the event said the man initially walked away, looking frustrated. However, the situation quickly escalated when he suddenly dropped everything he was carrying, turned back to the older man, and pulled out a knife.

How did the knife attack in Limburg unfold and who is the suspect?

The teenage eyewitness said the next moments were very chaotic and frightening. The suspect jumped at the older man, trying to stab him with a knife. This sudden attack shocked everyone nearby, who were not ready for it. The victim tried to defend himself while the suspect kept attacking him.

The victim was not harmed during the fight, but the suspect escaped by getting on a bus that stopped nearby. Another eyewitness reported that the victim remained sitting on the bench, looking shaken. The police arrived and filed a report about the stabbing incident. The Limburg public prosecutor’s office confirmed that an investigation is underway. Mayor Wim Dries (CD&V) stated that they were able to identify the suspect from images and they are taking the incident very seriously. The suspect will be questioned.
