Beijing, July 21 Brussels Morning Newspaper — Gaoxian County earthquake officials launched emergency response operations after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck Gaoxian County in Yibin, Sichuan Province, on Wednesday morning. According to the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC), the earthquake occurred at a depth of approximately 8 kilometers, producing noticeable shaking across nearby communities and prompting rapid inspections of buildings and infrastructure.
Authorities reported that two people sustained minor injuries during the earthquake. Emergency medical teams treated the injured while firefighters, police officers, and rescue personnel were deployed to assess residential areas, schools, hospitals, roads, and utility networks. Initial inspections found no reports of fatalities, and officials continued monitoring the region for possible aftershocks.
Emergency Crews Assess Buildings After Gaoxian County Earthquake
Following the earthquake, local emergency management agencies activated response plans to evaluate structural safety across affected communities. Engineers inspected bridges, public buildings, electricity networks, water systems, and transportation routes to identify any damage that could pose risks to residents.
Authorities also advised residents to remain alert as aftershocks are common following shallow earthquakes. Emergency shelters and response teams remained on standby while inspections continued throughout the day.

Sichuan Province experiences frequent seismic activity because it lies near several active fault systems formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. Although the magnitude 5.0 earthquake was considered moderate, its shallow depth allowed shaking to be felt across a wider area.
China maintains an extensive earthquake monitoring network that enables rapid detection of seismic activity and supports coordinated emergency responses. Officials said they will continue assessing infrastructure and monitoring seismic conditions before issuing a final damage assessment.
