Paris (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said that the European Union will respond to Donald Trump’s latest tariffs announcement.

Jean-Noel Barrot in an interview with TF1 television said France and its EU allies should not hesitate to protect their interests in the face of the U.S. tariff threats.

French Foreign Minister was also asked if France and the European Union would respond, he stated:

“Of course… This is already what Donald Trump did in 2018, and we responded. We will again respond.”

The European Commission will decide on the sectors that will be affected by a response, he further said.

“It (the Commission) is ready to push the trigger when the time has come. Now, this time has come. It is in no one’s interest to start a commercial war with the European Union,”

He said.

A day earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to introduce a huge escalation in his trade policy. He imposed tariffs on steel and aluminium imports. Trump said that he would be imposing a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminium entering the United States starting February 10.

How does Macron respond to tariffs announcement?”

On the other hand, French President Emmanuel Macron has always made his case clear on how the U.S. tariffs put forth by Donald Trump may hit the European Union. Macron expressed his views stating that a unified Europe is indispensable and that the role of spearheading this can only be accomplished by France and Germany.

Macron urged Europe to stand up for itself and called for economic strength if Trump follows through on his tariff threats. In a recent statement, Macron stated that tariffs applied by the U.S. on goods coming into America from European markets would not only hurt the economies of Europe but also push down the purchasing power of Americans’ hard-earned dollars and that the attention given towards China would be more handy.
