Paris (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said that French President Emmanuel Macron is inviting European leaders for a summit in Paris on February 16, 2025.
The “main European countries” will gather Monday in Paris to discuss European security, Barrot briefed France Inter. He urged that such sessions be held often and that they should not be “dramatised.”
As reported by Politico, the French Foreign Minister didn’t give particulars or say which leaders have been invited to the short-notice meeting.
Which European leaders are expected to attend the Paris meeting?
According to analysts, there was no indication if the Paris session would involve all European Union heads or only a smaller group of nations and if other European leaders would also be invited. Germany, Italy, the UK, Poland, and Denmark seem to be invited.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer implied that he plans to follow the emergency summit, according to media reports. Starmer stated Europe is at a “once-in-a-generation moment for our national security.” “It’s clear Europe must take on a greater role in NATO as we work with the United States to secure Ukraine’s future and face down the threat we face from Russia,” Starmer expressed, according to the media reports.
Moreover, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also spoke about the scheduled Paris meeting at the Munich Security Conference. He expressed that his country’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, will be heading to France. Sikorski stated he expects the crisis session to examine the challenges posed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
How does the Paris summit relate to Trump’s Ukraine peace talks?
Agendas for the informal meeting come after a week that witnessed Trump hold a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about peace discussions over the war in Ukraine and a statement of a face-to-face discussion proposed to take place in KSA.
Trump administrators are also heading to KSA in the coming days to start the dialogues. The EU hasn’t been invited to the talks. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officeholders aren’t aware of any meetings, and no representatives are travelling to Saudi Arabia.
