Staden (Brussels Morning Newspaper) – A fire in Staden destroyed Michel and Lutje Vandenbussche’s garage on Drevestraat. Firefighters stopped it from reaching their house. 4 e-bikes were burned, but their mobile home stayed safe.

According to VRT News, a fire occurred on the night of Friday, July 25, 2025, to Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Staden, a municipality in West Flanders, Belgium. Information regarding the cause of the fire is not available, but a garage was destroyed at the Michel and Lutje Vandenbussche property on Drevestraat. The fire was seen just after 3 a.m. on Saturday by a man on his way to work. He saw the flames and called the emergency services right away.

“We woke up to several explosions. At first, we thought someone was breaking in. But then we saw flames and realised our garage was on fire,”

The residents said.

How did firefighters stop a Staden garage blaze from spreading?

Michel and Lutje Vandenbussche said they were thankful the fire brigade got there so fast and did not have to wait long. Their quick work stopped the fire from reaching the main farmhouse. The cause of the blaze is still being looked into.

The fire in Staden almost reached the home of the Vandenbussche family. Officials mentioned that the flames were so strong that the door between the garage and the house had already started burning. It was a frightening moment for the couple, who feared the blaze would spread further.

“The connecting door was already on fire. But thankfully, thanks to the fire department, the fire didn’t spread. We’ve only lost our garage, but it could have been much worse,”

They said.

Firefighters worked for a long time to cool down a fuel oil tank in the garage. Inside the garage, there were 4 electric bikes, including 2 folding ones, and they were all destroyed. There was not much else stored there.

“Luckily, there wasn’t much in the garage besides the bicycles. Our car just broke down and is in for repairs. A blessing in disguise,”

The couple said.
